Alex Martin

This day J S Hodges Attorney for the Commonwealth filed an information as follows, to-wit: To Hon. T P Gray Judge of the Lyon Court: I am reliably informed that Alex Martin is a person of unsound mind and a ____ (Lunatic or Idiot) and therefore ask that a Jury be impaneled to pass upon the subject.

Ordered by the Court, That M O Molloy Esq an Attorney of this Court be and he is hereby appointed to defend for and on behalf of the person under trial.

To inquire, etc., comes a Jury, to-wit: Ottie Hall, W E Wilson, Clem Salyers, W B Milne(?), W B Bu???, N H Atkins, Terry Du???ly, Luther ?all, ?? Duncan, D H Galusha, ? E ??son, L B Parrent.
Who being duly impaneled and sworn according to law, after hearing the evidence returned the following verdict, viz: We of the jury find from the evidence that Alex Martin is a person of unsound mind and a Lunatic
That the unsoundness of mind has existed since 1908 [??]: that he was born in Floyd County Ky (State or Country) and resides in Floyd County and is 31 years of age; that he was not brought into this State for the purpose of becoming a charge upon the Commonwealth; that he owns one horse, two cows, 7 head of hogs which is all the estate of any kind; that ____ father is living and mother is living and reside in Floyd County and have estate about 500 acres of land [unreadabale] sufficient to support the person under trial; and said Alex Martin is not capable of laboring either in whole or in part for his support.

What relatives, if any, have been insane, peculiar or intemperate? Uncle, grandfather, aunt and sister and 1st cousin.
Duration of present attack: From Dec. 1908 How exhibited and has it changed in character? By violence and wild delusion acts. He is in worse condition now.
Supposed cause? Bad health and hard work. Any delusions or hallucinations, and if so, what? Delusions.
Subject to fits? yes, if so, how long and from what cause: 6 to 8 hours.
Natural temper and disposition toward relatives: quiet when not in the delusional mood. Any threat, attempt of tendency to injure self or others? yes Violent? yes Destructive? yes Cleanly? No; Periodic frenzy and lucid intervals and duration of each: Both [unreadable] and at times for a week.
What restraints have been imposed and what treatment used: tied and confined in cell.
Any injury about the head ever received? no Any bodily disease from suppression of evacuations, eruptions, sores or injuries? no What estate have the parents, husband or wife of the person under trial? One horse, 2 milk cows, 7 head of hogs.
“Together with whatever else may be deemed material toward enabling the superintendent of the asylum to understand the case.”



Wherefore it is adjudged by the Court that said Alex Martin is a person of unsound mind and a lunatic (Lunatic or dangerous Idiot); it is ordered that he be committed to the asylum for the insane at Hopkinsville Ky., and that the superintendent of said asylum be immediately notified and directed to send for said lunatic. Should said Alex Martin be cured then he is to be returned to the State Prison at Eddyville Ky.
